"Holy Land U.S.A." began as a tribute to the spirit and work of artist-saint John Baptist Greco of Waterbury, Connecticut, whom I consider the earliest and strongest influence on my development as an artist in my own right. Though I have long since become estranged from the faith I was born into, his example of total dedication to one's art as a spiritual path has become the shining example towards which I fumblingly strive. As this project has evolved from novel to graphic novel, it has taken on a life of its own and has become my own "holy mountain" to build as I climb, and though I am still laboring in the dark night of the lowest levels, I yearn for the clear light of the summit.

I do not work sequentially, so although I have dozens of drawings completed so far, only a small percentage have coalesced into pages. It may well be a long time before the direction of the story line becomes apparent, but I hope in the meantime people find the images, snippets of conversation and narrative evocative. This journey promises to be a long one, but it feels like the most important work I have ever attempted. May all be auspicious.
